Russian army begins receiving S-500 missiles
Russian Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Borisov announced the start of the delivery of the S-500 anti-aircraft missile systems to the Russian Armed Forces.
"The testing of this missile system has been completed and we have begun to deliver it to the armed forces," Yuri Borisov told reporters in the city of Tyumen, where he is attending a conference on the oil and gas industry.
He pointed out that the system that they began handing over to the Russian army does not contain some of the equipment agreed to be included in the system.
Russia began testing the new air defense missile system in 2020, and the Russian Deputy Defense Minister, Alexei Krivoruchko, said at the time that the first batches of "S-500" missiles should reach the Russian armed forces in 2021, while industrial production of the systems should begin. S-500 in 2025.
And the Ministry of Defense announced, in July 2021, that the first S-500 systems should reach the air defense forces in the Moscow countryside after passing the official test.
The S-500 system belongs to the new generation of surface-to-air missiles, and is capable of intercepting ballistic missiles, and can also intercept aircraft, cruise missiles and other air targets.
The system will be able to simultaneously detect and strike 10 ballistic missiles that fly at a speed of 7 kilometers per second.
It will also be able to hit the destroying warheads of hypersonic missiles that exceed the speed of sound, after they are separated from the missiles.
The S-500 system is superior to its predecessor, the S-400, and its American competitor, the Patriot Advanced Capability 3.
