Fewer road deaths?

According to estimates from the National Interministerial Road Safety Observatory (ONISR), 221 people died on the roads in mainland France in November 2021, against 257 in November 2019. A number which is therefore down by 14% compared to November 2019.

The number of people killed on the roads of metropolitan France in November fell by 14% compared to the same month in 2019 with 221 deaths, according to estimates released Friday by Road Safety.

The comparison is made with 2019 rather than 2020, the year in which the data was affected by the Covid-19 crisis, which led to a change in travel habits, particularly during confinement.

Compared with November last year, the overall death toll in November 2021 is believed to be up 28%.

Young adult mortality on the rise

The decrease compared to November 2019 is particularly significant among those over 65: 61 died on the roads, 27 less than in the same month two years ago.

Pedestrian mortality is declining, as is that of two-wheelers and motorists.

In addition, bodily accidents (4,366) are less numerous than those recorded during the same period in 2019 (4,625).

But the mortality of young adults is on the rise. Among young people aged 18 to 24, 42 were killed in November, 10 more than in the same month in 2020 and 13 more than in 2019. Unlike road fatalities, traffic is , up compared to last year (+ 35%), according to Road Safety, which quotes Cerema (Center for studies and expertise on risks, the environment). Regarding overseas, 30 people were killed in a road accident in November 2021 (against 24 in November 2020 and 39 in November 2019).

The number of bodily accidents recorded in overseas territories by law enforcement agencies stood at 272 November 2021 (252 in November 2020, 268 in November 2019).

During these accidents, 316 people were injured, compared to 322 in November 2020 and 341 in November 2019.
