The projects of the City of Meaux (Seine-et-Marne) concerning the square Georges Brassens are not unanimous among the inhabitants.

The transformation imagined by the municipality involves cutting down 12 of the trees on the site.

These chestnut trees are in poor health and pose a risk to passers-by, said those responsible for the redevelopment, quoted by BFM Ile-de-France.

The absence of planting pits brings the roots of the trees to the surface, explained in particular Julien Leloup, municipal councilor in charge of the works.

Opponents of the project have questioned these claims.

The National Tree Monitoring Group (GNSA) in Meaux has thus provided a report showing that the chestnut trees are in good health.

The association has also highlighted the presence of finches, a protected species, in the trees concerned.

The municipality for its part wished to recall that the square renovation project provides for 16 new trees of 8 m in height.
