A huge floating solar park is to be built on the Indonesian island of Batam from 2022.
The photovoltaic system on the Duriangkang reservoir in the south of the island will have an output of 2.2 gigawatts and cover an area of around 1,600 hectares, reported the Jakarta Post newspaper on Friday.
The energy storage system (ESS) should also have a capacity of more than 4000 MWh.
According to the companies involved, this is the largest floating solar power plant in the world to date.
Corresponding letters of intent have already been signed by the Sunseap Group, based in Singapore and the state agency for the free trade area and the free port of Batam (BP Batam), among others, it said.
Work is expected to begin next year and be completed in 2024.
More than 3000 local workers are to be involved in the construction.
Batam is one of the Riau Islands in the Malay Archipelago.
The archipelago is located off the east coast of Sumatra in the South China Sea.
Batam is a free trade area and only about 20 kilometers from Singapore.
