At around 2 p.m. the first car drives over the Oeder Weg again.

For the whole of Saturday and half of Sunday, the main section of the shopping street, between Jahnstrasse and Glauburgstrasse, was completely closed.

Thanks to the dry weather on Saturday, the marking work progressed quickly, so that early Sunday afternoon, earlier than expected, the workers began to dismantle the red and white barriers and open the Oeder Weg to traffic again.

Residents and passers-by stop at the roadside and look at the unfamiliar picture that the roadway offers.

Most noticeable are the junctions of the side streets, for example on Wolfsgangstraße or Oberweg: Almost the entire intersection area is marked with a red signal color.

At second glance, you notice the white markings on the sides of the street, in other words where there was previously parking lot.

From thick and thin to dashed, dotted, crossed to zigzag, lines are represented in almost every conceivable variation.

A "multifunctional strip"

The dashed stripe marks the lane, which is only five and a half meters wide. A construction worker explains what the thick and thin lines that mark rectangles in front of the curb are all about. Where the lines are wide, drivers are still allowed to park where they are narrow, but not. Café Oeders already shows what these areas should be used for instead: It has put planters, tables and chairs on the street, where guests can already drink coffee under parasols.

A little further into town, in front of a cobbler and a laundry, the hard shoulder is marked with pictograms showing men with hand trucks.

This is a so-called delivery zone.

Overall, the road construction authority speaks of a “multifunctional strip”, consisting of areas for outdoor catering, parking and suppliers.

Between this strip and the road there is a "safety separation strip", which is supposed to protect restaurant guests from passing cars, for example.

Redesign to meet the needs of cyclists and pedestrians

The markings are part of a major redesign to meet the needs of cyclists and pedestrians.

This also includes a targeted reduction in car traffic.

The access from Eschenheimer Tor to Oeder Weg has been blocked for a week.

For this purpose, a barrier was set up on the southern side of the system ring, which only allows cyclists to pass.

However, cars can still turn north from the Eschenheim facility onto Oeder Weg.

A driveway from Eschersheimer Landstrasse has been set up so that cars from the Eschenheimer Tor can continue to reach the Turm-Center car park.

The renovation is to continue on Monday with the installation of bicycle brackets, bollards and flexible traffic beacons.

In addition, signs are installed to make the line system more transparent.
