A copy of Super Mario Bros still in its original packaging and dating from 1985 became the most expensive video game in history at an auction held in Dallas (United States) this Friday. One person spent $ 114,000, or just over 100,000 euros, to acquire this American version of the cult title created by Nintendo, setting a new record. She wanted to remain anonymous, reports Eurogamer .
Twenty-nine auctions were recorded before the cartridge was finally awarded to its new owner. The auction house Heritage Auctions, which organized the event, had described the game on its site as "the best rated copy of Super Mario Bros. ever sold publicly".

The conservation of the object was indeed evaluated at 9.4 out of 10. The cartridge is new and its packaging has never been opened. It is still sealed. But part of the extraordinary value of this edition lies in the small cardboard label that is located under the plastic packaging, explain the auction professionals. It was only placed there for a few months during the production of Nintendo's cult title. Few cartridges are therefore adorned with this sticker.
The record for the most expensive video game was previously held by another version of Super Mario Bros., acquired at auction for 100,150 dollars (around 88,000 euros) in February 2019. This copy was also in perfect condition and still in its packaging original.
