He was Mafalda's dad.

Argentinian designer Joaquin Salvador Lavado Tejon, better known by the pseudonym Quino, died on Wednesday at the age of 88, his editor revealed.

The artist died in Mendoza, the city where he was born in 1932. This scriptwriter and cartoonist is internationally famous for the character of Mafalda which he created in 1962.

Comments on the dictatorship

Originally, this little girl with the tongue hanging out was to appear in an advertising campaign for a brand of household appliances.

But the project was abandoned.

The heroine will find her place in comic strips, published in particular since 1964 in the magazine

While Argentina was under the yoke of a military dictatorship, Quino used Mafalda to comment on the news of the time and to convey messages.

If the artist stopped drawing his character in 1973 to devote himself to other humorous projects, he accepted that it be used occasionally by associations linked to Human Rights such as Amnesty International and Unicef.
