On April 22, China's first artificial population of blue-headed pochards was established at the Beijing Zoo.
The blue-headed pochard is a bird of the genus Anatidae in the order Anseriformes. It is mainly distributed in southeastern Asia, and China is an important migration distribution area.
The blue-headed pochard has extremely high water quality requirements. In addition to climate change, natural enemies and human factors, the number of wild populations has continued to decrease, and the degree of endangerment has become more and more serious. Therefore, it is known as the "giant panda among birds".
In 2012, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) classified the pochard duck as "critically endangered" in the "International Red List of Threatened Species"; in 2021, China will list the green-headed pochard as a national first-level key protection wild animals.
The green-headed Pochard has a round body and a large head. The head and neck of the male adult individual are green and shiny, the eye sockets are bright white, and the white, brown and maroon feathers between the breast and abdomen form an interlaced pattern.
At present, the Beijing Zoo has a total of 54 "three generations" of green-headed pochards.
On the 22nd, in the breeding grounds of the Beijing Zoo, the light-bodied green-headed pochards sometimes splashed in the pond and sometimes went ashore to rest, enjoying the spring day comfortably.
Beijing Zoo stated that it will continue to cooperate with Beijing Biodiversity Conservation Research Center and other units in the future, focusing on research on the breeding and breeding technology of pochard ducks, further expanding the artificial population of pochard ducks, and researching its wild reintroduction technology.
