Last September, at the Air Self-Defense Force Gifu Air Base in Kakamigahara City, Gifu Prefecture, the "P1 patrol aircraft" manufactured by Kawasaki Heavy Industries and scheduled to be delivered to the Maritime Self-Defense Force deviated significantly from the runway immediately after landing.
At that time, a Maritime Self-Defense Force pilot was maneuvering and flying for inspection, and there were no injuries to 10 people in total, including the crew members on board and the staff of the Ministry of Defense.
According to a report compiled by the Japan Transport Safety Board, foreign matter was found in the hydraulic system that moves the patrol aircraft's legs, and multiple scratches were found on the parts that switch directions.
It is presumed that the cause was that foreign matter got in between this part and another part and was fixed, and the direction of travel could not be controlled.
Since the foreign matter contained materials that were not originally used, it is highly likely that they were mixed in during the process of assembling the aircraft.
According to the Japan Transport Safety Board, Kawasaki Heavy Industries has taken measures to prevent recurrence, such as requesting parts manufacturers to specify cleaning work in work instructions.
