Only 1,210 children out of approximately 22,000, or approximately 5% of the enrollment, returned to school in Montpellier, during the first week of deconfinement. These are the figures mentioned by the mayor of the seventh city of France, Philippe Saurel (DVG), after an exchange in videoconference with the directors of the 126 schools of the town.
The mayor of Montpellier had expressed himself on numerous occasions to ask parents to keep their children at home, as far as possible. He believed that this resumption of classes exposed them too dangerously to the coronavirus.

Almost all of the establishments have reopened in Montpellier, with the exception of a dozen schools. For most of them, their configuration did not allow students to be accommodated under the sanitary conditions prescribed by the protocol of the Ministry of National Education.
