Users are having problems freeing up storage space on their computer or phone, and some of them don't know that they can free up this space by clearing the cache.

And you may not be aware of this invisible feature.

So here's how to clear the cache on major browsers and on Android or iOS devices.

We have also included instructions on how to clear data for one site if you need to, and we mention here the most popular browsers, Chrome, Safari, and Edge.

Chrome browser

Click on the three dots in the upper right corner in the desktop version, then select More tools and then Clear browsing data.

In the case of the mobile application:

  • Select Settings, then Privacy and Security, and then Clear browsing data.

  • Make sure the Cached images and files box is checked, and you can also choose to clear your browsing history and cookies if you wish.

You can click on the Advanced tab if you would like to have more selection.

  • Use the "Time range" drop-down menu to choose the length of time that works for you, and in the case of clearing the cache, it is best to clear all data regardless of the duration.

  • Click on the Clear data button.

To clear data for a specific location

  • Click on the three dots in the top right, then select Settings, then Privacy and Security, then Cookies and other site data.

  • Scroll down and click View all cookies and site data.

  • Find the website name in the upper right corner and select the trash can icon on the left.

Safari browser

Interestingly enough, Safari makes it very easy to erase all your data - including your cache, browsing history, and cookies - in one fell swoop.

But it's not obvious if you just want to clear your browser's cache.

To do it the easy way:

  • While using the Safari browser on the desktop, go to the top menu, select Safari, Clear History, select the time period (last hour, today, today, yesterday, all history) that you want to clear, and then click Clear History.

  • On your iPhone, tap the bookmarks icon at the bottom of the screen (it looks like an open book) then the history icon (the clock), hit the clear button and select your time period.

  • If you want to clear browser cache on a web browser, it will be more complicated.

Look to see if there is a "Develop" section in Safari's top menu.

If not, go to Safari > Preferences and from there click on Advanced and check Show Update in the menu bar, then click on Update and then "Empty caches".

To clear data for a specific location

  • Click on Safari, then Preferences, then click on the Privacy tab, then Manage Website Data, where you will get a list of websites.

  • To remove one, click on it and then click Remove.

To remove all website data from Safari, click Remove All.

Microsoft Edge

The method for clearing the cache differs between the desktop and mobile version of Edge, so we will describe the process separately.

desktop browser

Tap the three dots in the top right corner, select Settings > Privacy, search and services, scroll down to Clear browsing data, tap Choose what you want to clear, and then make sure Cached photos and files are checked (and check any other data you want to clear).

Use the "Time range" drop-down list to select the last hour, last 24 hours, last 4 weeks, or all time.

Click Clear now to clear data for a specific site, then click the three dots at the top right, select Settings > Cookies and site permissions, then Manage and delete cookies and site data.

Scroll down and click View all cookies and site data.

And search for the website's name in the upper right corner or scroll down to find it.

Click the down arrow next to the site name, then use the trash can icons to delete cookies and data.

You can also use the buttons at the top to remove all displayed cookies or remove third party cookies.

mobile browser

Tap the three dots at the bottom of the screen, select Settings, then Privacy and Security, and then select Clear browsing data.

Make sure Cached Images and Files are selected, and use the dropdown menu to choose your date range.

You can also switch to Clear browsing data on exit to erase all your data every time you exit Edge.
