G7 health ministers said on Monday that the Omicron variant was "highly transmissible" and required "urgent action". 

The Omicron variant, "highly transmissible", requires "urgent action", warned the health ministers of the G7 countries on Monday, after an emergency meeting convened by London.

"The ministers praised the exemplary work of South Africa, which has been able to detect the variant and alert others", they add in a joint statement, stressing in particular the "strategic relevance of ensuring access to vaccines" .
