  • In 2020, in the Occitanie and Nouvelle-Aquitaine regions, companies working in the aeronautics and space sector lost 8,800 jobs.

  • Occitania, very dependent on this sector, pays a higher price than the neighboring region, with 6,250 fewer jobs.

  • In aeronautics, contractors have resisted better than SMEs and subcontractors, which show a loss of 10% of the workforce.

Unsurprisingly, employment in the aeronautics sector shows a sharp drop linked to the health crisis, according to a study published on Friday by Insee Occitanie.

In 2020, in the Occitanie and Nouvelle-Aquitaine regions, companies working in the aeronautics and space sector lost 8,800 jobs, not counting temporary workers, which represents a drop of 5.5% of their workforce.

Occitania, very dependent on this sector, pays a higher price than the neighboring region, with 6,250 fewer jobs.

This is more job loss than those created in 2019 in this sector, which amounted to 5,500 jobs.

After a clear increase throughout the year 2019, employment stabilized in the first quarter of 2020, then fell sharply from the second quarter, a direct consequence of the spring confinement which brought the industry to a standstill. aviation industry.

SMEs more affected than principals

“Trade, the manufacture of transport equipment, accommodation and catering are the sectors most affected by the consequences of the health crisis,” explains Caroline Jamet, director of INSEE Occitanie.

There was a less significant impact of the health crisis on other industries such as the food industry, which regained stability at the end of 2020. "

In aeronautics, contractors have resisted better than SMEs and subcontractors, which show a loss of 10% of the workforce.

Metallurgy, the activity most affected in Occitania as in New Aquitaine, alone explains nearly half of this decline, with 2,100 fewer employees.

Maintenance and aeronautical and space construction resist better.

Job creations of the last two years erased

In the tertiary sector, the workforce in the sector fell by 7.9%.

For the aeronautics and space sector, the tertiary sector is almost exclusively limited to IT activities as well as to engineering and other specialized, scientific and technical activities since more than 90% of tertiary employees working for the aeronautics and space sector are employed in these two sectors.

It is in engineering and these other specialized, scientific and technical activities that the workforce fell most sharply, ie a drop of 3,000 employees.

Establishments in Occitanie, where the tertiary sector represents 40% of the sector's workforce, suffered most of this decline with 2,850 fewer employees.

The aeronautics sector had created 5,500 jobs in 2019 and 4,600 in 2018. The health crisis has got the better of these 10,000 jobs created over the past two years.
