August 24, 2021Kathy Hochul became New York's first female governor, taking control of a state government trying to get back to work after months of distraction over sexual harassment allegations against predecessor Andrew Cuomo.



The Democrat originally from Western New York was sworn in as governor in a short private ceremony overseen by state supreme judge Janet DiFiore.



Cuomo left office two weeks after announcing he would step down rather than face a probable battle for impeachment.
