Nuremberg (dpa) - Where thousands of people otherwise crowd between stands, there is now a yawning emptiness.
Instead of holding the opening prologue from the gallery of the Frauenkirche, this year the Christ Child greets all over the world from the Internet.
The world-famous Christkindlesmarkt should have started this Friday in Nuremberg.
Due to rising corona numbers, Mayor Marcus König (CSU) canceled the market in October.
Now the Christ child Benigna Munsi reminds in his video message not to meet each other.
"Write a few lines or call more often or just send a little attention," she said.
Instead of public appearances in old people's homes, day-care centers and hospitals, it will be offering a digital Advent calendar from December 1st and a telephone consultation from November 30th.
"In order to protect everyone, there will be no (...) encounters with the Christ Child," said Mayor König.

Around two million people otherwise flock to the main market in the city during Advent.
The grand opening with the Christ Child is considered the highlight and will be broadcast live on television.
Traders usually sell goods at around 180 stalls on the market.
Now the city has set up an online shop for Christmas products.
Sweets such as gingerbread - but not mulled wine - are sold at 25 Christmas stalls in the pedestrian zone.
Otherwise, the market generates around 180 million euros for the city, including through hotel stays, taxi rides or visits to restaurants by tourists.
