Düsseldorf (dpa) - North Rhine-Westphalia has been awarded the contract to host the World University Games 2025.
This decision was made by the Executive Committee of the International University Sports Association FISU, announced the State Chancellery of North Rhine-Westphalia on Saturday.
The competitions of the World University Games, formerly called Universiade, take place in Bochum, Duisburg, Düsseldorf, Essen and Mülheim an der Ruhr.
The world's largest multisport event after the Olympic and Paralympic Games and is taking place in Germany for the first time since 1989 in Duisburg.
Around 10,000 athletes will compete in 18 disciplines over twelve days in 2025.
"Short distances, existing competition venues as well as organizational talent and enthusiasm for sports on the part of the hosts are the valuable elements of this successful application," said DOSB President Alfons Hörmann.
NRW has also been working intensively on an Olympic bid for years.
The application for “Rhein Ruhr City 2032” has practically failed because the International Olympic Committee (IOC) favors Brisbane, Australia.
