• Started on November 11, during a slack period in order to limit the repercussions on passenger traffic, the works were delayed.

  • Due to the failure of a crane engaged on major works at Frontignan, the works were extended for at least 24 hours.

  • There will therefore be no train between Montpellier and Sète, a strategic section which has repercussions for traffic between France and Spain, regional traffic but also many Intercités departing from Marseille, Toulouse, Montpellier and Bordeaux.

SNCF had scheduled a track renovation project between November 11 and 14 in Occitania. Its goal: to carry out four worksites to modernize the tracks between Montpellier and Toulouse. The date was chosen to limit the inconvenience caused to employees going daily to their workplace by train. This work was to be completed on Sunday. Ultimately, they will play extra time. No train will run this Monday and until Tuesday morning, between Montpellier and Sète.

"A failure on the crane at the site to replace a railway bridge in Frontignan delayed the end of the work," explains SNCF.

This exceptionally large crane capable of lifting loads of 600 tonnes, is used to lay the decks for the new railway bridge spanning the Rhône canal in Sète.

The machine broke down on Saturday afternoon.

Following the repair carried out last night, the crane is again fully operational and work was able to resume very early in the morning.

Work carried out on a bridge built over a century ago

The bridge on which the work is carried out dates from 1910. Its renovation provides for the replacement of the six structures that make it up.

Initially scheduled for spring 2020, this 6.7 million euros project was postponed due to the health crisis.

The closure of this strategic axis has consequences for all traffic in the south of France.

No end-to-end rail traffic (passengers and freight) will be possible on the southern route and on the France - Spain connection.

The TGV will originate and terminate at the two stations in Montpellier.

Trains departing from Bordeaux will terminate at Toulouse or Béziers.

No train supposed to use this route will run from Marseille and between Béziers and Marseille.

Finally, no TER will run between Sète and Montpellier.
