A pair of trainers worn by basketball legend Michael Jordan at the beginning of his career sold for almost $ 1.5 million in an auction on Sunday.

“The most valuable sneakers that have ever been offered at auction,” commented the auction house Sotheby's on the deal on the online service Twitter.

Jordan wore the 1984 Nike Air Ships to games during his first season with the Chicago Bulls.

The final retail price was $ 1,472,000, according to Sotheby's.

Sports shoes regularly fetch high sums at auctions: the record holder so far was a pair of shoes by Jordan, which were sold for 615,000 dollars in August 2020.

In April, a pair of rapper Kanye West's shoes even changed hands for $ 1.8 million, albeit in a private sale.

The market for rare sports shoes has grown rapidly in recent years.

What used to be a niche market is now arousing the interest of the general public and numerous collectors.
