07 September 2020Chancellor Angela Merkel "does not rule out" consequences on the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline after the case of the poisoning of Russian dissident Aleksei Navalny. This was stated in Berlin by Steffen Seibert, spokesman for the German government.
Responding to a question as to whether the chancellor would protect the pipeline project from Russia to Germany, Seibert said that "the chancellor believes it would be wrong to exclude something from the start".
To be even clearer, the spokesman added that Merkel "is connected to the statements of the foreign minister".
The head of German diplomacy, Heiko Maas, said he "hoped that Moscow's reaction does not mean that the whole project has to be rethought".
