According to provisional data, the Hessian population has risen sharply.
As of June 30, around 6.37 million people lived in the federal state.
That was 1.2 percent more than at the end of 2021, as the Federal Statistical Office announced on Tuesday.
The increase is likely to be primarily due to the influx of Ukrainian refugees who left their homeland because of the Russian war of aggression.
At the end of 2021, the Hessian population was just under 6.3 million, which was a high at the time.
The population has also risen nationwide - according to preliminary data, more than 84 million people lived in Germany for the first time in mid-June.
All in all, around 750,000 Ukrainians immigrated in the first half of the year.
According to the Federal Office, the population figures were calculated on the basis of the 2011 census.
As soon as the results of the 2022 census are published at the end of 2023 with a cut-off date of May 15, this should be the new basis for calculation.
As a result, the population figures could possibly be corrected downwards.
However, the increase in population in the first half of 2022 will not be affected, it said.
