The transit camp managed by the Italian Red Cross in Ventimiglia, not far from the French border, will be dismantled by the end of August. The prefecture has not validated the reopening of this center. It had been closed to new arrivals at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Between early January and late July, attempts to cross from Libya to Italy increased by 91% compared to 2019, according to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees. Dozens of migrants therefore sleep under bridges, on the beach or on the banks of the Roya.
The right took over the town hall of Ventimiglia last year. The far-right leader Matteo Salvini chose this town to launch his campaign for the regional elections on Tuesday: “Gentiles yes, no idiots! The Italians first, the rest of the world after! "
The Council of State pins the police
"The Red Cross camp was fundamental", deplores Maurizio Marmo, head of Caritas. The migrants had “access to a doctor and to an information point on asylum rights”.
According to humanitarian associations, this right is often violated on the French side. The Council of State has just pointed out the case of a Central African woman arrested with her five-year-old son recently operated on. She had been sent back to Italy.
"The border police services were required to register this request (...) without being able to refuse entry", contested the Council of State on July 8. This judgment is a first since France re-established border controls between Ventimiglia and Menton in 2015.
