08 September 2020Today in Trieste the summit on migrants of the Balkan route in the presence of the Minister of the Interior, Luciana Lamorgese.

"Already this evening we will be putting in place initiatives regarding controls", also to "intercept criminal organizations".

In addition to checks on the motorways, "blocks will also be made on roads 54 and 56 and this morning, on my way here, they showed me where the vehicles will be stopped for more accurate checks".

"Let's see how they go."

Minister Lamorgese said at the end of the meeting, speaking of the arrival of migrants in Friuli Venezia Giulia.

"I think that the closure of the minor crossings, which would be 21, can be tackled as a result of all these activities that we are carrying out".

For now we are starting "an intensified activity on the minor crossings from tonight. We will talk about the outcome" of the feedback, "if they are as positive as we hope", added the owner of the Interior.

"In the near future, I believe in the immediacy, calls will be made by the ministry because there has been additional funding" for unaccompanied foreign minors.

"The Municipalities - he explained - asked me to provide regulatory subjects that would affect their skills that they consider excessively burdensome. They must participate in Siproimi projects for unaccompanied foreign minors, given that Friuli Venezia Giulia is the only region where there is not even a project ".

And referring to the new calls, he added, "this could be an opportunity for the participation and sharing of the responsibilities of unaccompanied minors also of other actors and not only of the municipalities, also as regards the economic aspects". 

With reference to a police operation to combat migrant smuggling, which took place this morning in Palermo, Lamorgese said: "The attention of the judiciary and police forces is maximum to combat the trafficking of migrants by criminal associations. transnationals that favor illegal immigration behind the payment of money by the migrants themselves and their families ", congratulating the Palermo mobile team and the central operational service of the state police for this morning's operation, coordinated by the Prosecutor's Office of the Republic of Palermo, which led to the discovery of a criminal organization operating in different areas of the national territory and in other European countries, and Africa.

"This operation - observed Lamorgese - confirms the importance of the intense international cooperation of the Police with the countries of origin and transit of migratory flows, which has already allowed, with other previous similar investigative activities, to identify dozens of human traffickers operating on the Central Mediterranean route ". 

Lamorgese recalled, however, that "there are entrepreneurs who are trying to eliminate competition by relying on mafia capital".

Those who come from Tunisia "are autonomous small boats. Once they have left, they cannot be stopped", he explains.

With the Tunisian executive "we had asked for a meeting at the beginning of July. There was perhaps some delay on their part, but they knew that the government was about to fall, as it did then".

And then he explains that the Interior Ministry expects a second wave: "The president of Tunisia went to Sfax to talk to the people. Now they don't leave Sfax anymore. But since trafficking - he highlights - is a form of organized crime, they are very quick to reorganize and the ports of departure are changing ". 

At the meeting with Lamorgese the regional and local leaders: the president of Friuli Venezia Giulia, Massimiliano Fedriga, the vice president, Riccardo Riccardi, and the regional councilor for security, Pierpaolo Roberti;

the prefect of Trieste, Valerio Valenti and the other prefects of the Fvg, and again the commissioner of the regional capital, Giuseppe Petronzi, and the mayors of the capital municipalities and other local bodies.
