When a metro bridge collapsed in Mexico City, at least 15 people were killed and around 70 others were injured on Monday.

This was announced by the civil protection authority on the online service Twitter.

Mexican media released images from surveillance cameras that showed the bridge collapsed while a train was passing over it.

The accident occurred on Monday evening (10:00 p.m. local time) on line 12 in the south of the Mexican capital near the Olivos station.

Local TV channels showed dozens of firefighters and rescue workers at the scene of the accident.

They tried to free people from rubble, cables and bent steel.

At least one car was also buried under the rubble.

Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum went to the scene of the accident.

"A support beam gave way," she said on site.

The wounded would now be taken to hospitals, said the city government's secretary, Alfonso Suez del Real, to Milenio Television.

"What happened on the metro today is a terrible tragedy," tweeted Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard.
