In order to prevent accidents when the car is backing up, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism will oblige new cars from May next year to be equipped with back cameras and sensors that can check the rear.

Accidents when a car backed up were one after another, such as a visually impaired man being hit by a truck backed up in Tokushima City in 2015 and died. According to the Traffic Accident Comprehensive Analysis Center of the Public Interest Incorporated Foundation, last year 1 There are 16,400 cases a year.

For this reason, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism has amended the safety standards of the Road Transport Vehicle Law to require vehicles to be equipped with back cameras, sensors, and mirrors that can check the rear.

The camera is supposed to be able to see the range from 0.3 meters to 3.5 meters behind the car body, and the sensor is supposed to be able to detect the range from 0.2 meters to 1 meter.



The mandatory target will be applied to new models after May next year, and new models of existing models will also be applied from those produced after May 2024.



The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism says that even if a camera or sensor is installed, it is important to check it visually to prevent accidents.



In addition, the installation of devices that measure the mileage, fuel consumption, and instantaneous fuel consumption of automobiles will become mandatory from October 2024.
