Maatouk as coach of the Syrian national team after the dismissal of Romanian Tita

The temporary committee that runs the Syrian Football Association announced today, Wednesday, the appointment of Ghassan Maatouk as coach of the national team, a week after the dismissal of Romanian Valerio Tita for poor results in the World Cup qualifiers.

The committee said in a statement, "The temporary committee of the Syrian Arab Football Federation decided to name Mr. Iyad Mando as director of the first national team and Captain Ghassan Maatouk as coach of the team... in preparation for the next two matches of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers against Lebanon and Iraq on the twenty-fourth and twenty-ninth." From next March.

Tita had lost his position only three months after taking charge, "because of his failure to provide the desired addition to our team, which suffered a loss against the UAE and South Korea and officially bid farewell to the World Cup qualifiers," according to the statement of the Syrian Federation of the game.

Syria lost 2-0 against the UAE and then fell by the same result against South Korea in Dubai to bottom out the first group in the last stage of the Asian qualifiers for the World Cup without any victory in eight matches.

Tita took over in November, succeeding Nizar Mahrous.

The Romanian coach previously led the Syrian national team in a previous period between 2010 and 2011. He also trained the Al-Ittihad and Police clubs in Syria, in addition to the UAE’s Sharjah, the Jordanian Al-Faisali, the Kuwaiti victory, Al-Safa, the Lebanese star, the students and the Iraqi port.
