Rome (AP) - Former football professional and TV expert Lothar Matthäus is hoping for offensive player Thomas Müller to return to the German national team.

“I hope for German football that Müller will finally be called up again,” said the record international in an interview with the Italian sports newspaper “Gazzetta dello Sport” (Friday).

Müller deserved it and the fans deserved it.

The Germans could win the European Championship if things went well in defense, said the 60-year-old.

But you also have to be satisfied if they should reach the semi-finals.

According to Matthäus, the team of national coach Joachim Löw has a very good midfield with Bayern kickers Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka as well as Ilkay Gündogan from Manchester City and a good offensive.

The problems are "behind".

The attack helps to win games, but the defense gives you titles, said Matthäus.

The former world and European champion sees the French national team as the favorite for the EM, which starts in Rome on June 11th.
