RFI and the "Stéphane Hessel" short story competition of which he was the winner in 2014, he published his first novel, Terre ceinte, the following year (Présence africaine) and received the Ahmadou-Kourouma prize, then the Grand prize for the Métis novel de Saint-Denis-de-la-Réunion, as well as the French Voices Award for its translator into English. He is the author of a second novel Silence du choir (Présence africaine, 2017), recently awarded the World Literature Prize. Mohamed Mbougar Sarr has just published his third novel under the title De pure hommes co-edited by the French house Philippe Rey and Jimsaan publishing house in Dakar. all started with a viral video in Senegal. We see how the corpse of a man is unearthed, then dragged out of a cemetery by a crowd. As soon as he sees it, an interest, even an obsession, for this event is born with Ndéné Gueye, a young professor of letters disappointed by the teaching and tired of the moral hypocrisy of his society. Who was this man ? Why was his body exhumed? To these questions, only one answer: he was a Góor-Jigéen, it was said, a "man-woman". In other words, a homosexual.
Ndene sets out to find this man's past, and even goes to meet his mother. In a poetic and scrupulous writing, Mohamed Mbougar Sarr signs here a moving novel on the only big question which is worth in the eyes of his hero: how to find the courage to be fully oneself, without betraying or lying to oneself, and whoever or the price?
