Laurent Berger calls on Airbus not to "rush" layoffs

Arm yourself with patience before making irrevocable decisions such as dry layoffs.

This is the advice that Laurent Berger, the secretary general of the CFDT, sent to Airbus this Wednesday morning at the microphone of RTL.

It comes in a tense context at the aircraft manufacturer whose boss, Guillaume Faury, announced to employees that it was "unlikely" that voluntary departures are sufficient to overcome the industrial crisis caused by the coronavirus, and to fulfill the objective of 10,000 job cuts in France, including 5,000 in France, concentrated for 3,500 of them in Toulouse.

For Laurent Berger, "Airbus has 7,600 planes on order and about ten years of load plan, we are not going to rush to cut jobs and skills in this company".

The trade unionist advocates rather that the aircraft manufacturer fits "first in the devices created for this period of crisis", such as long-term partial activity (APLD).

"A responsibility in preserving employment"

"Airbus must really negotiate an APLD agreement before announcing dry layoffs", insists the unionist, estimating that "companies cannot go to the aid desk (...) and at the same time not practice a responsibility in preserving employment ”.

Dry layoffs are the "red line" that the French and European Airbus unions refuse to cross in the current negotiations.
