Schwerin (dpa / mv) - The state government wants to evaluate the sub-areas that could be used as final storage sites for nuclear waste at specialist conferences next year.
The conferences are expected to be concluded in June 2021, as can be seen from the answer from the Ministry of the Environment to a small request from the AfD parliamentary group in Schwerin.
According to an interim report published at the end of September, from a purely geological point of view, about half of the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is theoretically suitable for a nuclear waste repository.
Factors such as population density were not yet taken into account in the first phase of the search for a repository.
As the AfD parliamentary group announced on Wednesday, the following sub-areas were identified: The Werle salt dome in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district, salt stones in the Rügen / Hiddensee area and parts of the Baltic Sea, and four different mudstone formations in the districts of Northwest Mecklenburg, Ludwigslust-Parchim, Rostock, Mecklenburgische- Lake District and Vorpommern-Greifswald as well as Schwerin and Rostock.
The most suitable regions are in the west and southwest of the country.
According to the ministry, the Federal Agency for Final Storage (BGE) has not yet specified individual properties.
The AfD parliamentary group criticized that the state government wanted to wait until the middle of next year to evaluate the areas.
