Kenyan police arrest runner's killer Tirup
The Kenya Criminal Investigation Directorate announced yesterday evening the arrest of the husband of the late Kenyan runner Agnes Gibet Terup, on charges of her murder.
The directorate stated on the social networking site "Twitter" that "the main suspect in the heinous murder of 25-year-old runner Agnes Terup has been arrested."
"Ibrahim Rutish, who was in a relationship with the athlete, was arrested minutes ago in Changamwe, Mombasa Governorate, as he was trying to flee to a neighboring country to escape justice."
The directorate explained that it is believed that Rotich stabbed Terop to death before he went into hiding, adding that his car collided with a freight car while trying to escape.
Rotich was questioned by the police in Mombasa and is due to stand trial following the murder charge.
The directorate stated that Terop's body was found in her home in Iten on Wednesday, "with clear stab wounds to her stomach."
Terupp took bronze in the 10,000m at both the 2017 and 2019 World Championships, and finished fourth in the 5,000m at the Tokyo Olympics this year.
Terupp broke the women's 10km world record earlier this year and was crowned the cross country world champion in 2015 when she was 19.
The Kenya Athletics Federation said on Wednesday: "Kenya has lost a jewel that was one of the rapidly rising giants of athletics at the international level, through her impressive performance on the track."
