Novak Djokovic, who was scheduled to compete for the mixed doubles bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics with compatriot Nina Stojanovic, forfeited due to a shoulder injury, the International Tennis Federation said on Saturday.

This injury "to the left shoulder" comes one month before the US Open (August 30- September 12) where the world No. 1 can achieve the Grand Slam, after his victories at the Australian Open, at Roland- Garros and Wimbledon.

Earlier this Saturday, Djokovic was beaten by Spaniard Pablo Carreno in the men's singles bronze medal match.
