Swedish national team defender Pontus Jansson left Leeds for Brentford before the season. For a couple of weeks, his old club was ready for the Premier League after 16 years and tonight his Brentford had the chance to join them.

But they did not take that chance.

The match went into extra time and at the end of the first extra time, Fulham got a free kick from long range. Left-back Joe Bryan signaled for a post, but trickily enough, he shot the ball in at goalkeeper David Raya's front post.

The 26-year-old full-back was full of confidence and with only a few minutes left, he wall-played his way forward, past Pontus Jansson, among others, and scored the 2-0 goal.

In extra time, Brentford Danish Henrik Dalsgaard managed to reduce to 2-1 and that was also the result in the money-tight qualifying final at Wembley.

Fulham could be sent off

It was also Fulham who led the game in the first half and they had the first hot goal chance when Raya was responsible for a huge save on a shot from Joshua Onomah.

Ten minutes later, Fulham's Harrison Reed could have been sent off when he hit Christian Nörgaard in the ankle with outstretched legs, but referee Martin Atkinson chose to only give a yellow card. If there had been a video review in the match, as there is in the Premier League, the situation would probably have been reviewed.

The next good chance came just after the break when Fulham midfielder Neeskens Kebano's free kick went just outside the post.

The two teams from west London still could not separate after 90 minutes, but then Bryan stepped forward and decided with his two hits.

Million rain over Fulham

It was only one season in the Championship for Fulham when they left the Premier League as late as last year. In addition to a place in the top league, the promotion means £ 135 million (approximately SEK 1.5 billion).

Jansson's former club Leeds and West Bromwich went straight to the Premier League.
