• Images of Afghans rushing to enter Kabul airport and on planes chartered by foreign governments have increased since the Taliban took power.

  • Numerous initiatives have since emerged online, including fundraising pools to charter planes and evacuate Afghans targeted by the Taliban.

  • However, this generosity still finds its culmination on the ground, via humanitarian associations which have been working in Afghanistan for many years and collecting donations.

Help them, from the virtual world to the real world.

As the first Afghan refugee planes arrive in France, the United Kingdom or Canada, many initiatives have emerged on the Internet to help those seeking to flee the country, once again in the hands of the Taliban.

For example, in the United States, Tommy Marcus, a New York meme maker, launched a very popular Gofundme kitty to charter planes and evacuate Afghans targeted by the Taliban.

This pot has collected nearly $ 6 million (5.1 million euros) in twenty-four hours.

Donate miles to offer plane tickets

In France, a mobilization has been set up in Marseille, with the support of Mucem, to help Afghan artists. A kitty was put online on helloasso to evacuate the artists and their families from Afghanistan, in particular those of the exhibition "Kharmohra, Afghanistan at the risk of art" which took place at the Mucem between November 2019 and March 2020. On Twitter, the Marseille museum specifies that this fund will also help refugee artists in the first months of their daily lives.

Another initiative, Miles4migrants, has been in existence since 2016. It offers to donate its miles or money to help people leave a country at war or flee persecution.

The organization, which had managed to book flights a few days before the Taliban took power, said in a statement that it remained, despite the cancellation of many commercial flights, "firmly mobilized to help [its partners] to bring Afghan families to safety ”.

Donate to humanitarian associations

Because, if these initiatives start online, it is on the ground, thanks to humanitarians and NGOs established for a long time in Afghanistan, that they succeed.

As explained in the text accompanying Tommy Marcus' pot, the evacuation operations are carried out in cooperation with "humanitarian groups, veterans, activists on the ground in Kabul".

Doctors Without Borders continues its medical activities in Herat, Kandahar, Khost, Kunduz and Lashkar Gah.

"MSF has received assurances from all parties to the conflict that our health structures, our staff and our patients will be respected," the association said.

Many other associations and / or UN agencies also need donations and are, for example, listed on this page.

Because, on the spot, the needs are immense.

According to the United Nations Refugee Agency, since the end of May, the number of internally displaced persons requiring immediate humanitarian assistance has reached 550,000 people.

They join the estimated 2.9 million Afghans who were already internally displaced across the country by the end of 2020.
