Munich (dpa) - The school closings at the beginning of the year left deep marks on children and adolescents according to an investigation by the Ifo Institute.

On average, they lost more than three hours of learning time per day, as a survey published on Tuesday by the Munich research institute shows.

Instead of 7.4 hours a day, the students only learned 4.3 hours - that's less time than they spent with computer games, social networks or their mobile phones.

In their study, the researchers did not give school policy good marks - also because they found only relatively small improvements to the first lockdown.

Even with "a long lead time and after urgent appeals from parents and science" it was not possible to ensure that all children were adequately schooled in distance learning.

The results are "sobering".

Among other things, the researchers complain that too few children have regular video lessons.

For 39 percent of the children this was the case no more than once a week.

And the lockdown also had an impact on health: 31 percent of parents said their child gained weight during that time.

"It is particularly worrying that 23 percent of the children did not spend more than two hours a day with school," said the head of the Ifo Center for Educational Economics, Ludger Woessmann.

"The corona crisis is an extreme burden on learning development and the social situation of many children."
