man in his 30s died from a side effect of thrombosis after receiving the AstraZeneca vaccine, the government is considering raising the age of vaccination.

What are the initial symptoms of side effects and what to watch out for? This part will be explained in detail by Dong-chan Cho, a medical professional.

<Reporter> A

man in his 30s who died from a rare thrombotic side effect received AstraZeneca residual vaccine at the end of last month.

Like the British thrombosis case reported to the academic community, it is known that blood clots formed in the blood vessels in the brain, causing cerebral hemorrhage and then death.

The thrombotic side effect resulted in 40% of deaths due to early unknown treatment.

However, it is now possible to recover with immunoglobulin, so it is important to get treatment early.

Treatment started only three days after symptoms appeared, but it seems that the confirmation was delayed.

[Park Young-Jun / Head of Adverse Response Investigation Team, Central Quarantine Countermeasures Headquarters: It was a severe headache different from usual, but there were some difficulties in the suspected part (cerebral thrombosis) because there were parts where the symptoms of headache were non-specific.] The

problem was confirmed in Korea

.

There is no dedicated test equipment for this, so if the symptoms are ambiguous, the diagnosis will inevitably be delayed.

[Lee Jin-soo/Professor of Neurology at Ajou University: The PF4 (special) antibody detected in side effects patients is no longer tested in Korea, so it takes two weeks to send it abroad and receive the results again.]

In Korea, the diagnosis should be indirectly through blood findings and brain CT or MRI.

This is where symptoms matter the most.

Early symptoms of cerebral thrombosis include a dilated headache, blurred vision, and out of focus three or four days after the inoculation, and severe abdominal pain and vomiting are common when blood clots form in the intestine.

As a result of the European Medicines Agency's investigation of thrombotic side effects, AstraZeneca had 169 out of 34 million and Janssen was rare with 6 out of 7 million.

Most of them were women under the age of 50, but in Korea, all recovered cases and deaths were men in their 30s.

The target of AstraZeneca vaccination differs from country to country, but in Germany, those aged 18 years or older, in the UK, those over 40 years old, and in Australia, where two people recently died from thrombotic side effects, they changed it to those aged 60 or older.

The quarantine authorities said they would consider changing the vaccination target after reviewing side effects.
