The first confirmed case of Corona 19 among foreign athletes who came to Japan for the Tokyo Olympics.

According to Kyodo News and NHK, one out of nine Ugandan athletes who arrived at Narita Airport in Japan on the afternoon of the 19th to participate in the Tokyo Olympics tested positive for Corona 19 in a gene amplification (PCR) test conducted at the airport.

The Ugandan team completed two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine from AstraZeneca (AZ), England, and was tested for COVID-19 within 72 hours of departure and submitted a negative certificate.

Although all quarantine procedures suggested by the Japanese health authorities were followed, it was confirmed during the quarantine process while trying to enter Japan while being infected with COVID-19.

As it is an incident that showed the possibility that the quarantine network could be breached, concerns are likely to increase that Corona 19 will spread further with the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics.

The remaining eight people who passed airport quarantine took a dedicated bus and moved to Izumisano City, Osaka Prefecture, where there is a pre-camping facility.

The Uganda team is the second country to enter Japan to participate in the Tokyo Olympics, and this is the first time a confirmed case has occurred.

They will compete in boxing, weightlifting and management.

The first team to enter Japan is the Australian women's softball team, which arrived on the 1st of this month.
