During this rainy season, the longest ever, the embankment collapsed and there were many reservoirs overflowing with water. However, as a result of our interviews, it was confirmed that there were quite a few places that did not have a device to measure the water level in the reservoir. There are hundreds of such reservoirs in the metropolitan area alone.

Reporter Han Joo-han covered it.

Restoration work is in full swing in a village that has turned into ruins.

It has been more than 10 days since the damage occurred, but it is still impossible to tell where the rice paddies and fields are.

[Jongjin Lee/Ijang, Sanyang-ri, Icheon-si, Gyeonggi-do: That is a vineyard. As you can see, there is no trace. Behind the huts (seedlings) are alive for four weeks.] As the

reservoir bank collapsed, 60,000 tons of water quickly hit.

The high water pressure pushed the embankment backed by a lot of rain from the inside, and eventually the embankment was unable to withstand and collapsed.

This reservoir did not have a water level gauge, which is a minimal alarm.

It was difficult to predict the risk of the collapse of the embankment.

The problem is that these reservoirs are full.

There are over 200 reservoirs in Gyeonggi-do alone that do not have an automatic water level measuring device.

They are mainly small reservoirs managed by the city or county, but the risk of spreading into a disaster at any time as torrential downpour increases cannot be excluded.

I looked around the reservoirs managed by the Korea Rural Community Corporation.

Water level measuring devices are installed in 16 reservoirs in the northwestern part of the metropolitan area, and quantity information comes in real time from an ultrasonic level meter.

Discharge work is also operated remotely, enabling quick response.

[Choi Jae-cheol/Korea Rural Community Corporation Ganghwa Branch Manager: (when concentrated heavy rain is forecast) we must continuously lower the water storage rate to 80% in advance and keep the drainage gate empty in order to prevent flood damage.]

Local governments agree with the need for introduction, but enormous The cost is a burden.

[Bora Kim/Gyeonggi-do Anseong Mayor: Basically, I need a water level measuring device and a (manual) emergency floodgate. Installation costs of 140 million to 50 million won in one place. It is difficult for the city or county to do it independently.]

Gyeonggi-do urgently requested support from the central government to expand the reservoir management facility.
