Visual disturbances are the most common sensory impairments.

It is even the Drees, the statistical institute of the Ministry of Health, which affirms it.

Indeed, 7 out of 10 people over the age of 20 wear glasses or contact lenses, knowing that the figure climbs unsurprisingly to 97% after 60 years.

But equipping yourself correctly has a cost, and not the least!

From single to double

According to the figures available from Health Insurance, dating all the same to 2014, a pair of glasses fitted with single vision lenses costs 316 € on average, compared to almost double for multifocal equipment (613 €).

But according to a study carried out by UFC-Que Choisir in 2018, there are significant disparities between mutual insurance contracts and the prices charged by the brands.

After having studied some 215,000 optical quotes, the consumer defense association has in fact concluded that for the same pair of simple glasses for children, the prices could range from 126 to 257 €, excluding frames, while high-end progressive glasses range for adults were charged between €399 and €711.

However, reimbursements from health insurance and complementary health insurance are currently very limited, in order to encourage users to turn to the 100% optical health care basket.

100% Health

Implemented in this sector in 2020, this reform makes it possible to fully cover the cost of new equipment every two years.

It is therefore ideal to have nothing to pay!

To benefit from it, however, you must be covered by a "responsible health contract", requiring your complementary health insurance to comply with precise specifications.

But rest assured: 95% of contracts in the sector meet these criteria!

Armed with the prescription from your ophthalmologist, all you have to do is go to the store to get an estimate.

If the choice of glasses is necessarily more limited in the context of 100% Health, be aware that the optician is obliged to have at least 17 models of frames for adults and 10 others for children, all in two colors.

Thinned, anti-reflective and anti-scratch lenses treating all visual disorders are also part of this care basket.

Our "OPTICAL" file

If professionals must automatically offer you at least a 100% Health quote when changing your glasses, be aware that not everyone necessarily plays the game, as denounced by consumer associations and public authorities.

According to the Ministry of Health, only 17% of optical sales made in 2021 thus benefited from the zero rest reform.

Do not hesitate to assert your rights in store!

Good reflexes

In addition to being health equipment, glasses are also increasingly a fashion accessory.

To find a pair to your liking and within your budget, you have to be methodical.

Knowing that there are more than 12,000 optical outlets in France, the first instinct must of course be to bring the competition into play!

In this quest for a good deal, also remember to contact your complementary health insurance provider, who may be able to recommend you to a partner optician, a guarantee of quality and care.

In addition, if we tend to rush to the frames first, it is better to start by determining what types of lenses are necessary in order to know which frames will be able to adapt to them without additional cost.
