Food plays an indisputable role in maintaining our good health.

It can also prevent inflammation or calm it down when it is already there.

However, the doctor of Europe 1, Jimmy Mohamed, does not advise practicing a restrictive diet in cases of inflammatory disease.

Inflammatory diseases such as psoriasis or Crohn's disease can be really disabling on a daily basis.

Certain diets are often recommended in these situations to calm the symptoms.

But are they effective?

Doctor Jimmy Mohamed gives an update in his column

Notre Santé

on Europe 1, Wednesday morning.

What is an inflammatory disease?

"Inflammatory diseases are all pathologies where an inflammation turns against one of your organs. It can be the skin, the digestive tract or even the joints. For example: ankylosing spondylitis, psoriasis or even Crohn's disease .

They are extremely frequent because they concern a little more than 6 million French people.

And even if you are not directly affected, inflammation is still bad for everyone.

It promotes obesity or even type 2 diabetes.

Can an inflammatory disease be cured with a special diet?

At present, there is no anti-inflammatory regimen that can treat any of these diseases.

In addition, you should not start with restrictive diets such as gluten-free diets or ketogenic diets, that is to say with zero sugar.

Doctors report many deficiencies with these diets.

Some studies have also evaluated the effectiveness of superfoods, like turmeric in Crohn's disease.

Unfortunately, there is no evidence of any real effectiveness.

Some patients say they are improved by these diets.

In reality, the symptoms will decrease in intensity but during a blood test the markers of inflammation remain very high.

It's just a semblance of healing.

Can Certain Foods Cause Inflammation?

What is true, however, is that foods, especially sugary foods, can be inflammatory. An experiment on mice proves it: the researchers gave them a very small dose of sugar for a few weeks and then examined their digestive tract under a microscope. After only 8 weeks, they could see inflammation on their digestive wall. We must therefore be careful, especially with industrial sugars contained in ultra-processed foods. There has also been an increase in these diseases with the start of industrialization and the advent of fast food.

Red meat can also cause inflammation in the digestive tract and potentially worsen symptoms in Crohn's disease.

Finally, trans fatty acids, used in the food industry as stabilizers and preservatives, are sources of ignition.

They are found in processed food products such as pastries or pizzas.

What to do in case of painful attacks?

First, you must consult a doctor.

But sticking to a residue-free diet for a few days will help digestion and leave the colon at rest.

Choose white meats, lean fish, pasta and semolina.

Avoid the consumption of raw fruits and vegetables.

Once the crisis is over, you have to return to a normal lifestyle, eat fiber, five fruits and vegetables.

And increase your ration of legumes because food balance and diversity are the primary vectors of good health. "
