Dutch Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk, who suffered a ligament in his knee during the derby against Everton (2-2) on Saturday will have to be operated on, the Reds announced on Sunday.

Virgil van Dijk will undergo surgery on the knee injury sustained during Saturday's 2-2 draw at @Everton.



Following surgery, Virgil will begin a rehabilitation program to enable him to reach full fitness as soon as possible.

"No precise timetable has been given for his return to the game at the moment," adds the club, but given the type of injury, his absence should be counted in months.

Keystone of the defense of the defending English champion and the Dutch selection, Van Dijk had seen his knee turn during an aggressive exit from Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford at the start of the match.

The Toffees goalie had not been penalized because of an offside at the start of the action.
