Defending champion Lewis Hamilton has won the wild Formula 1 premiere in Saudi Arabia.

After an extremely tough duel, the Mercedes driver prevailed against his World Cup rival Max Verstappen in Jeddah on Sunday after the Red Bull driver had fought unsportingly against the Briton.

The World Cup decision has thus been postponed to the season finale in Abu Dhabi in a week.

Because of his controversial maneuvers, Verstappen had to fear a penalty from the stewards after the race.

The race was interrupted several times due to accidents and car parts lying around.

Again and again, the race management had to intervene in controversial scenes between Verstappen and Hamilton.

The negative climax was when the Dutchman apparently let the seven-time champion show up.

For Haas driver Mick Schumacher and Aston Martin driver Sebastian Vettel, the penultimate round of the season ended prematurely after accidents.
