Sakhir (dpa) - Günther Steiner's specification for the first race of his two Formula 1 newbies Mick Schumacher and Nikita Masepin is rather modest.

"You should bring the car home: drive as much as possible, including the race to the end," said the team boss of the US team Haas.

Schumacher and Masepin both recently turned 22 and competed in Formula 2 last season, which Schumacher won.

Steiner is not yet thinking about placements with his debutants.

"It's going to be tough enough anyway."

In the meantime, Schumacher doesn't want to make his debut in the top motorsport class and said: "It won't be that I try to be extremely aggressive."

The goal is to cross the finish line in the deserted Haas race car on Sunday (5:00 p.m. CEST / Sky) in the desert of Sakhir.

For the Formula 3 European Champion of 2018 and Formula 2 Champion of 2020, this year, and especially in the first of the 23 races, it's all about getting used to the premier class of motorsport.

"I don't have to learn everything right now," he emphasized.

He can think about what the most important things are, take them on and check them off one by one.

On the course in Bahrain, with a view to the fast lap in qualifying on Saturday, it is also about learning “where the limit of these tires really is”.

The car is one of the weakest in the field, and the racing team prefers to invest money and energy in 2022 when the rules change.

Schumacher and Masepin should be ready “if the car is hopefully better” next year, Steiner emphasized.
