Golf star Tiger Woods was traveling too fast before his car accident in February.
Instead of the permitted 45 miles per hour (72 km / h), he drove downhill at 84 to 87 miles per hour (up to 140 km / h), the Los Angeles police said on Wednesday.
The high speed was the reason why the 45-year-old lost control of the wheel, said Sheriff Alex Villanueva.
The professional golfer's blood samples were not taken to test for alcohol or drugs.
In the accident on February 23, Woods was seriously injured and had to undergo several operations.

He's now feeling better again, as colleague Rory McIlroy announced on Tuesday.
"When you hear about that and you see the car and the accident, you think, man, he's going to be in a hospital bed for six months," said 31-year-old McIlroy of a visit to Woods in March.

"But he's actually doing better than that," said the Northern Irishman before the Masters in Augusta, which Woods will miss because of the serious injuries to his leg.
"Hopefully, if his recovery goes well, who knows, he could be back in twelve months."

McIlroy was impressed by Woods' trophy room, in which only the trophies for the 15 major victories are displayed.
