A retired general practitioner in Great Britain has been jailed for 12 years for sexually abusing almost 50 patients over several decades.

A Glasgow court sentenced the 72-year-old to a total of 54 counts on Wednesday.

"You have persistently committed these crimes against your patients for 34 years," Judge Iain Armstrong said.

"You have undermined the trust in medicine by destroying the trust these women had."

The 47 victims also include four girls who were under 16 at the time of the crime.

The crimes took place between 1984 and 2018, primarily at the man's practice in the North Lanarkshire area of Glasgow, but also at a police station and emergency room.

The doctor kissed and hugged the women, touched their breasts and made inappropriate comments.

The man initially denied the allegations.

At the end of the trial, his defense attorney Janice Green emphasized that her client had shown "extreme regret" and accepted that imprisonment was unavoidable.
