Germany searches Hyundai and Kia headquarters over diesel scandal
The German public prosecutor in Frankfurt announced today, Tuesday, that it has issued an order to search the headquarters of the two Korean companies, Hyundai and Kia, due to a concrete suspicion of fraud in the scandal of illegal lockout devices installed in diesel cars to control the exhaust of these cars.
The inspection campaign also included the headquarters of the Burgvarner Automotive Supplies Company.
About 180 investigators participated in the campaign in eight places in Germany and Luxembourg, and the campaign was coordinated by the European Judicial Cooperation Unit "Eurogast".
A spokesman for the central headquarters of Hyundai Europe in the German city of Offenbach said today that the company fully supports the investigations.
This case relates to more than 210,000 cars licensed through 2020, and investigators say that controlling the engines of these cars has stopped or restricted exhaust gas cleaning in many everyday situations.
The Volkswagen Group was the first to admit the installation of this type of exhaust cleaning shut-off device.
It is reported that investigations are also taking place with many other manufacturers and auto supply companies due to similar facts.
