Garlic has many health benefits, as it fights pathogens such as viruses and bacteria, and prevents cardiovascular diseases.

However, it should not be taken in excess to avoid troubles such as heartburn, and it should be noted that dietary supplements containing garlic may increase the effect of some medications.

The German clinical nutritionist, Professor Martin Smolich, explained that "garlic is rich in sulfur compounds, which have a blood-thinning, hypotensive and cholesterol-lowering effect, and therefore protects against cardiovascular diseases and strokes."

He added that "garlic contains secondary plant compounds that help eliminate viruses, bacteria and fungi, in addition to (B vitamins) important for nerve health, and (vitamin C), which works to strengthen immunity."

For her part, the German nutritionist, Daniela Krell, warned against excessive consumption of fresh garlic, explaining that “eating an excessive dose of garlic leads to irritation of the digestive system and heartburn.

To avoid this trouble, fresh garlic should not be eaten in an amount of more than five grams per day.

She stressed the need to pay attention to the fact that food supplements containing garlic may lead to drug interactions with some medications, as they increase the effect of drugs that inhibit blood clotting and drugs that reduce high blood pressure.

And Creel added that "taking high doses of food supplements containing garlic leads to some health problems, such as vomiting, nausea, diarrhea and bloating."

Garlic is full of secondary plant compounds that help kill viruses.
