In order to reduce the amount of radioactive waste that accompanies the decommissioning work of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, TEPCO has announced a policy to construct a new melting furnace that melts metal debris.

The decommissioning work of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant is generating radioactive waste such as concrete and metal debris, which is expected to reach approximately 480,000 cubic meters as of March and 790,000 cubic meters in 10 years.

TEPCO has announced that it will build a melting furnace that melts metal debris at high temperatures in the latter half of the 2020s.

The specific scale of the equipment and the types of waste to be targeted will be examined in the future.

TEPCO plans to reduce the amount of waste to about one-third by reusing low-radiation waste and incinerating felled wood, but the amount of radioactive waste continues to increase due to the limited site. The issue is how to store and dispose of things.
