Selection Luis Enrique: "I don't pretend to please everyone"
Soccer: Marco Asensio's 'debt' with Luis Enrique
Frank de Boer
(Hoorn, 1970) does not forget the last time he crossed paths with
Spain
.
You either.
It was in the
World Cup final in South Africa
that he lived off the bench as
Bert van Marwijk's assistant
.
That 2010 would begin his career as a coach at Ajax, a brilliant start to which he has followed a gray trajectory, with apparently clear ideas and poor results.
Two months ago he took over from
Ronald Koeman
as the Netherlands coach and is still looking for his first win.
And opposite will be
Luis Enrique
, his partner at Barça for four and a half years.
Frank de Boer came to the Barça club in 1999 with his twin Ronald after a bitter dispute with Ajax.
It was 'the Barça of the Dutch', a caricature: under the command of
Louis van Gaal
, his mentor, there were eight on the squad.
"We had a great team but we were not a team, a team," he lamented in an interview with the magazine '
Líbero
'.
"There were too many egos," he later acknowledged.
On leaving Barça, he followed the classic path of so many retiring footballers.
Turkey, Scotland, Qatar
... until I take the board.
First in the lower categories of Ajax and later in the selection as an assistant with another member of that
Barcelona, Phillip Cocu
.
A few months after the World Cup, he took the reins of the
Ajax
first team
with resounding success: four leagues in his first four seasons.
In 2014 he would face Luis Enrique in the Champions League.
The two victories were for the Asturian.
Two blots
Frank de Boer left
Ajax in 2016
, beaten precisely by
PSV de Cocu
in the Dutch league.
With a good experience in his suitcase, he left home to make the jump to the big leagues, but his two attempts were a resounding failure: at Inter Milan he lasted 85 days and at
Crystal Palace
.
At
Inter
he was overtaken by a club that, despite recent history, is still a giant.
"There were ex-presidents with a lot of power who said things about me in the press, a sports director with a lot of influence, agents ...
It was all political
. When you train a club like that you have to know how to play on many fronts," he lamented in the press of his country.
All that and a "rotten locker room."
He lost the job in less than three months, with four losses in five games.
At the Crystal Palace the shock was
cultural
.
How else can it be explained that a club wants to go from Sam Allardyce's cement to the Dutch school.
De Boer had to give his arm to twist because he had no one to play with as he wanted.
He lost his job in September, after losing the first four days of the Premier without scoring a single goal (nor would they do so until the eighth).
In 2019 he took over from
Tata Martino
at the helm of
Atlanta United
.
In his first year he won the Cup and the Super Cup, but this summer he left the team after being eliminated with three losses (and again no goals) in the tournament with which the MLS saved the season in the pandemic.
One loss and two draws
Frank de Boer has vowed to follow Koeman's path to re-float the Netherlands.
Today Barça coach revived an 'oranje' who had missed the last two national team tournaments.
From his hand he qualified for the next
European Championship
and reached the final of the first Nations League.
The start has not been successful: he has two draws and one defeat in his first three games as coach.
In the premiere against Mexico, he lost by the minimum (1-0) and in his two official commitments, in Bosnia (0-0) and Italy (1-1) he did not go beyond the tie.
The Spain of his former teammate
Luis Enrique
will be a demanding test.
