Found a boat dating back to the Mayan civilization more than a thousand years
Archaeologists have discovered in Mexico a boat that is more than a thousand years old.
Mexico's Ministry of Culture announced Friday that archaeologists found the boat while inspecting works along a Mayan train route to be built on the Yucatan Peninsula, near the ruins of the famous Mayan city of Chichen Itza.
It was reported that underwater archaeologists discovered the boat while they were in the so-called cenote, a freshwater pit, which is abundant in the area, and partially interconnected and was considered sacred places by the indigenous Mayans.
According to reports, the boat is 1.6 meters long, 80 centimeters wide, and 40 centimeters high.
A preliminary estimate indicated that it dates back to the period between 830 and 950 AD, long before the arrival of Spanish conquistadors in Mexico in the 16th century.
The scientists said that this discovery is important because it is the first boat of its kind to be discovered completely and in good condition in the area that was formerly under the Maya.
It is likely that it was used to draw water from the "cenote" or to make offerings there.
The Mayan train is scheduled to cover a distance of about 1,500 km, mostly in the Yucatan Peninsula, from 2024 onwards, carrying about 3 million tourists annually.
