Former security official John Lee takes power in Hong Kong
John Lee, the former security official who oversaw the crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrations in Hong Kong, was appointed as the head of the executive branch of this financial and commercial center by the votes of a committee limited to Beijing loyalists today.
John Lee, a 64-year-old former police officer, was the only candidate to succeed outgoing official Carrie Lam, who has decided not to seek another five-year term.
He is the only person responsible for the Hong Kong authorities coming from the police circles, and was responsible for security in Hong Kong during the wave of major pro-democracy demonstrations that swept the city in 2019 and oversaw the suppression of the protests and the process of re-establishing extremely severe political control that followed.
"I know it takes time to convince people, but I can make it happen with action," he told reporters.
He expressed his determination to build a city "brimming with hope, opportunity and harmony" after the authorities "restored order after chaos."
Lee has not yet revealed many concrete details of his policy, but he said he will reveal more after taking office on July 1, the 25th anniversary of Britain's return of the city to China.
